History of Tamegroute Green Pottery

Tamegroute’s iconic green pottery traces its origins back several centuries, rooted in the spiritual and artisanal traditions of southern Morocco. Developed by local potters of the Nasiriyya zawiya, one of the country’s oldest religious brotherhoods, this craft was created to support the community and preserve ancestral knowledge.

The distinctive green glaze — ranging from emerald to deep olive — comes from a unique mixture of local clay, minerals, and a centuries-old firing technique using traditional earth kilns. Passed down from generation to generation, Tamegroute pottery remains a symbol of Moroccan heritage and craftsmanship, celebrated worldwide for its raw beauty, imperfections, and timeless character.

— Moroccan Pottery : Tamegroute's Story

A Heritage Passed Down Through Generations

The story of Tamegroute pottery begins in the 16th century, when the region’s oldest workshops were established. According to local legend, a traveler from Fes brought the craft to the desert while studying at the Nasiriyya Zawiya, a historic Sufi brotherhood. During his stay, he began crafting clay objects to earn a living, using the nearby underground clay galleries.
Before returning to Fes, he passed his knowledge to the villagers — marking the birth of Tamegroute pottery. Since then, the art has been handed down from generation to generation, carefully guarded and cherished by the potter families of the Drâa Valley.
